The Cognitive Science Section (head: Dietrich Albert) invites applications for two Doctoral Student positions at the Institute of Psychology, University of Graz, Austria.

Your responsibilities

Research questions and methods will be chosen from topics in mathematical and computational cognitive psychology from the A+CHIS and the ITHACA project proposals respectively - involving as well as data analysis and theory, which are drawing on recent cognitive approaches.

  1. A+CHIS - Human-Centered Interactive Adaptive Visual Approaches in High-Quality Health Information – A+CHIS is a R&I-Project of the Austrian FWF (Der Wissenschaftsfonds), financially supported also by the University of Graz.
  2.  ITHACA - artificial Intelligence To enHAnce Civic pArticipation – ITHACA is an RIA-Project of the European Commission regarding TOPIC ID HORIZON-CL2-2022-DEMOCRACY-01-01.


Candidates with backgrounds in mathematical and computational psychology are very welcome. Also, knowledge in experimental methods, statistics, artificial intelligence, semantic technology, and/or computer science is favorable. Experience with data analysis and proficiency with (non)numerical models and methods, in addition to familiarity with cognitive psychology topics and mathematical, statistical and evaluation methods, are desirable.

Knowledge of English to Level C1 is requested, knowledge of German is recommended. Software skills in the field of programming (e.g., Python, R) are desirable. A higher academic degree in Psychology like Master (Univ.) or Diplom (Univ.) from an internationally accredited university is a prerequisite.

Equally desirable are a spirit of intellectual adventure, eagerness, and drive!

The positions will come with excellent cooperation in innovative research teams. Active participation within the interdisciplinary profile area “Complexity of Life in Basic Research and Innovation” (COLIBRI)  is possible.

Becoming a member of University of Graz, Institute of Psychology, Cognitive Science Section.

The realistic chance to obtain the Dr.rer.nat. (DSc.) from Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Graz in the Doctoral School Psychology.

Classification according the applicable standard salary schedule of (a) the FWF for Doctoral Candidates (30 hours per week) - https://www.fwf.ac.at/en/research-funding/personnel-costs - and (b) in accordance with the valid Universitäten-Kollektiv-Vertrag (University Collective Agreement) then in force: FWF € 2.300,30 (30h per week)/ KV(B1) € 2.293,95 (30h per week).

Both positions may be filled for a period of ca. two and a half years beginning with January 1, 2023 - finally depending on inflation rate. An extension is being considered.
